Google’s VP of Product for Search recently announced a set of important updates to how links will appear within Generative AI (Gen AI) results. These aren’t small tweaks, they are steps toward reshaping how users interact with information and how the open web connects with AI.  Call it what you like – AIO, GEO, SXO, SEO – our team is working hard to keep you in the know.

Here are the highlights from that announcement:

1. Embedded Link Carousels (Mobile)

Link carousels will soon appear directly inside AI responses on mobile. This creates a more visual and intuitive way for users to explore related sources without breaking the flow of their search.

2. More Contextual Inline Links

Google is improving how inline links show up within AI-generated answers. Rather than static text blocks, users will see more clickable references – helping them dive deeper into the web when they want more than a summary.

3. Expansion of “Web Guide”

The Web Guide experience – an AI-driven interface that surfaces links to non-Google pages – will continue to expand. While still in testing, Google is signaling its commitment to a broader rollout, including placement in the “All” tab for opted-in users.

Why This Matters

For years, search has been about two extremes: either you get a block of AI-generated text with no way to explore further, or you’re handed a list of blue links with no context. Neither is ideal.

What Google is moving toward is a hybrid search experience; one where AI provides context and summaries, while links provide depth and exploration. This evolution is not only logical, but also essential. Search shouldn’t be about choosing between AI or the web, but about giving users both.

The Bigger Picture

Generative AI isn’t replacing search. It’s transforming it. These changes show that Google recognizes the importance of balance: AI to guide, the open web to inform.

For marketers and brands, the implication is clear: the quality and contextual relevance of your content matters more than ever. If your site isn’t seen as useful or trustworthy by AI systems, it risks being left out of this new blended experience.

The convergence of AI and traditional search isn’t a prediction anymore – it is happening in real time. And those prepared to meet users in this new landscape will be the ones who thrive.

At MoreVisibility, we continue to analyze these shifts closely, ensuring our clients are not only visible in SERPs but also positioned well for an AI-driven search ecosystem.
