Google to Retire Review Extensions

Jill Goldstein - January 18, 2018

One of AdWords most under-utilized ad extensions is finally getting the boot. As of January 2018, review extensions will no longer show with ads. In the month of February 2018, review extensions will be deleted entirely from the AdWords interface (which also includes performance data) as noted in its relevant support page below.

As mentioned above, if historical performance data is something you would like to keep, download a report by doing the following:

#1 Click Ads & Extensions on the left hand rail of the new AdWords Interface, then Extensions at the top of the page.

#2 In the Extension Type drop down, select Review extension.

Review extensions have always been a great idea in theory, however in practice they have always been tough to get approved. Because of this, they were never widely adopted, and thus is likely the reason why Google is no longer supporting them.

That all being said, there are a ton of other ad extensions you should utilize such as sitelinks, callouts, location extensions, etc. The list goes on and on, and quite frankly is rapidly growing with time. As a reminder, it’s always best to implement as many ad extensions that make sense for your business and let Google show those that are most relevant to the user’s search.
