Blogging has become incredibly popular now among many Internet users. Teens are using blogs as an online diary of sorts, while adults are using them to get their names out there and to share any personal stories, opinions, or business information. Geoff Ramsey, Co-founder and CEO of eMarketer, presented some very informative blog statistics while presenting at a SFIMA event in early August.
To begin with, according to Forrester 34% of U.S. marketers say they’re using or testing blogs this year. Then, Jupiter Research states that 34% of large U.S. companies already have a blog this year. Next, in June of 2008 DMA delved even further into the statistics to show that 32% of small companies are using blogging as a tactic. Lastly Coremetrics stated that 31% of U.S. marketers have used blogging as a tactic.
So, what does all of this mean? Simply put, blogging is an emerging way to get the word out about your business or company. With the amount of users who are blogging continuing to increase, blogging is something more companies should be taking advantage of. To flip the statistics around, at least 70% of companies are not using blogging as a tactic today.
So why blog? It’s a cutting edge approach for promoting your product or getting your brand increased recognition. Not only are you able to talk about your business or products, but you are able to link to other sites to help gain credibility and awareness. Plus, if you allow comments on your blog you are opening up an entire new realm of possibilities for links. You can link to your website from your blog, others can link to their website from your blog, you can comment on other people or companies’ blogs and link to your blog (thus adding a link to your actual website) and much more. In other words, blogs offer endless possibilities for your website, which can be helpful for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as well.

Some rules to live by when blogging for your company are:
- Blog often to keep the content fresh.
- Cite your information accurately.
- Allow for more than one user within your company to post to your blog, in order to boost credibility.
- If you are going to allow comments and links on your blog from your blog audience, monitor those to ensure validity and prevent spam.
Good luck in blogging!
